Barber Profile: Stephen Martin

Scot Stephen Martin recently left his hometown of Glasgow for the Big Smoke and here at Murdock we’re very glad that he did. Bringing his incredible barber talents to our Covent Garden store, Stephen completes the trio of top barbers now working in our Seven Dials HQ.

How long have you been working as a barber? Where and when did you start?

I’ve been working as a barber for just over a year and a half now but I’ve been around barber shops all my life. My dad has a barber shop in Glasgow and that’s where I was working before I moved here. I also have a barber shop named after me in Glasgow – Stephen Gerard’s. Nothing to do with the footballer, it used to belong to my Dad and he named it after me and my brother. He doesn’t own it anymore though, my aunt does!

Who would you most like the wardrobe of?

I’ve always liked Liam Gallagher’s style. I suppose I’m a bit of a mod. And I like his Pretty Green label.

Who’s your hairstyle icon?

Well, as I’m a mod, the modfather himself Paul Weller has always had great hair in my opinion.

How would you describe your own personal style?

Skinny and smart with a bit of flair. i.e. modish.

What’s your favourite shop in London?

It’s not a shop but I really like the general vibe of Camden Market.

What was the last play, exhibition or gig you went to in London?

I haven’t had a chance since I moved to London so the last gig I went to in Glasgow was Carl Cox.

What do you think makes a good barber?

Making someone feeling comfortable enough that they’re happy to ask for what they really want, rather than just wanting to rush in and out, asking for a short back and sides and not feeling like they can make a fuss.

What item of clothing do you most like wearing?

My Harrington jacket.

Other than loved ones, what would you save from a house fire?

The first Celtic shirt I got when I was six with Di Canio on the back.

What’s your philosophy on physical appearance, wellbeing and grooming?

Being well groomed is essential to be able to pull of a good outfit. Even if you’re really well dressed, you’ll ruin it if you’re messy up top.

What would be your theme tune?

Not sure if it would be my theme tune, but the song that I’ve been listening to most since I moved to London is the new Bombay Bicycle Club single, Shuffle.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Girls Aloud! Their tunes are class!

Describe your perfect day off?

A long lie in, then watching a bit of football before spending the evening with friends.

What person living or deceased would you most like to share an evening with?

Bob Dylan. I bet he’s got some stories.

What place would you most like to visit?

Sydney or Rio de Janeiro. I’ve got family in Sydney so that might be the easy option, so probably Rio actually.
