Barber Profile: Alessandro Mapelli

Alessandro is a highly talented young barber, from Monticello – a small town close to Milan. He studied barbering in Como, northern Italy, learning the perfect blend of traditional techniques and modern approaches.

He has been a professional barber for over seven years, and has been with us at Murdock since 2009.

Here’s a quick look at what makes him tick:

Who are your male style icons?

Al Pacino. He has always looked good on-screen or off, dressed up or dressed down. He’s not handsome in a particularly tradtional way, but he has that brooding look about him – you can tell he has Italian blood!

What looks are you advocating in the next few months?

With summer on the way you can’t really go wrong by keeping hair short with a side parting.
But with some of my more adventurous clients I will be pushing a more extreme look – incorporating disconnection between the back, sides  and top. I like it left slightly longer through the top, styled with a shiny pomade.

What’s your personal style?

At work I keep it simple and classic: fitted white shirts, black waistcoats and trousers.

Favourite products:

Our own Matt Mudd wax is my favourite styling and finishing product – especially on shorter hair, you can get a lot of definition with only a small amount.

For shaving, Murdock Shave Cream and Jack Black Beard Lube are my preferred combo – use the beard lube either as a pre shave preparation or as a moisturiser and softener for a longer beard.

Favourite areas of London?

I live and work in Shoreditch, and, to be honest, I have little need to go anywhere else! It’s great to have an area of a big city that is so dedicated to the young, the artistic and fashionable. I feel really at home here – it’s the perfect place.

Final thoughts:

Ever since I started with the company, I have really loved the idea of Murdock – the blending of the traditional barbershop with up to date fashions and style. My clients are friendly, kind and very open to my advice – I feel like they really trust me.It is always best when a barber feels like they can provide a client with honest advice and offer the best option for their hair – that is what makes a great barber.
